A Natural Hair Story

This Sunday I am Shining the spotlight on some fabulous women who are flaunting their natural locks and sharing their story with the world. I love that people are really embracing the many ways in which we can style our hair while doing minimal damage.

For anyone who is considering giving up the creamy crack, get educated and learn about the chemistry of your natural locks before you embark on this journey. (Kimmaytube on http://www.youtube.com/ is a great place to start)

My personal advice to all my dolls whether your hair is permed, natural, weaved up or braided; keep it well moisturized and protected with a great conditioning regimen :-) As someone who has always been natural I am forever trying new products that will keep my hair healthy and strong. I love my weaves but I also love the fact that I have the option to rock a FAB hairstyle with my own hair (yes fellas I have a full head of hair under these tracks). Like I tell my friends, take care of those locks of yours, experiment while you're young but try your best not to do irreversible damage, and do not underestimate the power of a great conditioning and hot oil treatment in between styles especially in the wintertime. I am no cosmetologist but I know what works well for me and I don't like to brag but uhmm ya I've got that Good Hair ;-)

(Me back in 2007~College Days)

Good Luck to all my dolls who are about to make the 'Big Chop' and welcome to the DARK SIDE #EVL.

Sidebar: My Baby Sis turned 16 this weekend. I'm so proud of the FABulous young lady she has become. *Snaps to her*

Naija Video FAB

eLDee has always been one of my favorite naija artists especially with his dance hit Bosi Gbangba. But my respect for him grew when he took his music to a higher level with his track "One Day". elDee took this as an opportunity to address the current reality in Africa, while giving hope to our generation as he illuminates the dream that we hope will one day become a reality.

It's always great to see our celebrated artists using their talent as a vessel to tell the truth and hopefully challenge our current mindset.

**And of course I had to post some other great videos from eLDee**  Enjoy!!! :-)

So, FAB readers; what are you doing TODAY, that will help you realize your dreams for TOMORROW???

West Coast Video FAB

SONY Records' singer/songwriter, Tiwa Savage has finally premiered the anticipated video for her debut single "Kele Kele" a catchy song that has already created major buzz on the Internet. Although she is currently being managed by Tee Billz (former manager of Sauce Kid) of 323 entertainment, Tiwa Savage is not new to the scene, with singles such as "One Way Ticket", "Middle Passage", "Ife Wa Gbona" and an appearance on the UK's X-factor. Tiwa's beautiful voice and classy attitude has attracted the attention of many, including George Michael, Fantasia  and the executives at Sony Records.

Ready to officially jump start her solo career here in the USA, Miss Savage is clearly setting the stage for fellow female R&B artists from the continent. With music that can cross cultural boundaries and appeal to the African community and Western community, I have a feeling that this FABulous diva will be around for a while.

Enjoy the video :)

FAB looks forward to hearing more from Tiwa Savage as she furthers her solo career.

Look out for her album to be released in 2011!!

Platform H Launch, DC

Last weekend Ezzie and I attended the Platform H Charity Launch hosted in Washington DC. Platform H is an organization focused on empowering entrepreneurs through the building of strong relationships between young professionals whose minds are filled with fresh new initiatives, and business executives who have the resources to harness these great ideas into something beyond the scope of any one person. Platform H has recognized the existent gap hindering the success of young professionals and therefore are attempting to eliminate this gap so as to give the youth hope at a time where dreams are ephemeral.

The goals and objectives of Platform H are deeply rooted in the cultivation of social networking that not only propels the individual but propels communities as a whole. This focus on the bigger picture is highly reflected in their commitment to charity as they strive to develop social entrepreneurs and assist them in maximizing their achievements not for self but for a much larger global mission.

With performances, a silent auction and guests who flew in from all over the nation, Platform H created a great atmosphere that stimulated growth and inspiration within many of the attendees.

Her Crown of Glory

The topic of hair, especially "black hair" has been extremely popular in American media over the past few years, with India Arie's "I am not my hair" video, Tyra Banks' feature on Black Women's hair, Chris Rock's documentary "Good Hair" and now we have Willow Smith's "I whip my hair" and Sesame Street's "I Love my Haiiiir". Now for those of you who do not appreciate this new found attention that the world has for a black woman's crown of glory, take a trip down memory lane, and think of an instance where your hair, impacted the way you look at yourself or the way others look at you. It happens to all of us! For some its a positive moment, where we feel liberated as we flaunt our crown of glory and for other's it's a negative moment, where we shy away from the questions asked by curious or ignorant peers.

When CNN news featured the new skit on Sesame Street, I was filled with excitement and joy! I can't wait til all my little nieces and nephews watch it.

So let me share with you a story, a story of me as a child. A child who was surrounded by blond hair, blue eyed British girls. British girls who constantly asked me why my hair was so "springy". In tears I would run home and beg my mother to give me long blond hair. It wasn't that I hated my hair, it was just that I wanted to "fit in", and at the young age of 5, I sat in elementary school and took a pair of scissors to my beautiful long black locks. Well I only managed to cut off one braid before my teacher reprimanded me and sent my hair in a zip lock bag to my concerned mother, who had no idea how she would braid around this bald spot on the side of my hair.

As I grew up, I learnt to love my crown of glory and I even flaunt it once in a while. Everyone chooses to rock their hair as they please, some let it all out, some braid it, twist it, dread it, or weave it up. And despite the opinions of others, we all have our reasons for wearing our hair as we do, some for aesthetic reasons, some for practicality, some for employment opportunities and some for the health and goodness of our hair. I love to experiment with my hair, enjoying the multiple options I have, I've grown to love and respect my crown of glory, and I must say that the process has been much easier now that we don't have to hide our hair secrets behind closed doors. Now I'm not saying everyone is comfortable with open discussions about their hair; but it is nice to see that the children of tomorrow can love and flaunt their hair without having to endure an interrogation from their classmates.

Highlighting the positives; Nigeria turned 50!!!

I'm sure many are wondering why FAB was so quiet as Nigeria celebrated it's 50th anniversary. I am proud to be a Nigerian, but truth be told there is so much negativity presently surrounding Nigeria and the celebration of it's independence, that one could do nothing but watch and pray.

In searching for some positivity while scrolling through my twitter timeline, I came across a link posted by Ezzie B (writer of http://www.sexandlasgidi.com/) titled "10 Things You Can Learn From Nigeria" written by The Atlanta Post. Excited to have found something positive written about Nigeria, I felt it important to share this with all of you!

1. How To Write A Universal Literary Gem Set in Africa
2. How To Make Art A Weapon for Revolution
3. How to Leverage Your Knowledge of Petrol and Start a Multi-Billion Dollar Oil Business

...For the complete post please visit: http://atlantapost.com/2010/10/10/10-things-you-can-learn-from-a-nigerian56988/10/

As much as there is much negativity surrounding Nigeria, we cannot ignore the immense amount of positivity associated with Nigeria. Although some choose to focus on the negatives, we cannot let this consume us and deter us from further success. Africa as a continent has come a long way in the past 50 years, and the beauty and success generated from Nigeria should not go uncelebrated.

Hopefully we can make the next 50 years better than the last :-D

There are THREE sides to every story

Despite all the fabulous things that are happening in the world today, it is difficult for one to ignore the happenings in Lithonia Georgia, where sexual allegations have been brought up against Bishop Eddie Long of the New Birth Church by young male members of the Church.

The internet has been filled with the opinions of many; some say that Bishop Long is innocent while others have already slain him a guilty man. Upon speaking with many educated and religious people of African descent it is great to see that there are still many that are holding their tongues, and refusing to judge a case in which the truth is yet to be uncovered and justice is yet to be served. All in all it is important for us to keep all those involved in our prayers, and before passing judgment please be reminded that there are 3 sides to every story; his side, their side...and the truth. None of us are perfect, but we all pray that we are portrayed for who we truly are.

With that being said please watch the statement/sermon made by Bishop Long this Sunday morning.

Additional footage on a second sermon from Bishop Eddie Long is available here:

http://link.brightcove.com/services/player/bcpid1345089824?bctid=620439778001

*UPDATE* Jamal Parris, one of the males filing the lawsuit against Bishop Eddie Long, has now come forward and spoken to Fox News, the pain in his eyes sends shivers down my spine; the TRUTH needs to come out, soon! Until then FAB is watching and listening to each side of the story.

We continue to pray for all those involved, and that justice is served.

Have a blessed week dolls.

Salone Model FAB!

During my usual web search for Fabulousness I fell upon a soft face coupled with a colgate smile and a tall yet petit frame, usually it's the body builder eye candy that catches my eye, however there is something uniquely intriguing about Sierra Leone's own Salieu Jalloh who is currently gracing the fashion world.

With Clients ranging from Bloomingdales and NY Times to Vogue Hommes Japan and Sean John, Salieu is clearly a great fit for not only high end fashion editorials but also for street wear and urban designs.

Although Salieu may not be considered a sex symbol by many, he embodies the true essence of maintaing ones true personality while attaining ones dreams. FAB wishes Salieu the best of luck as he continues to grace the international pages of fashion.

For booking please contact, Red Model Management located in New York, NY.

Rebuilding Nigeria One Village At A Time

What better way to spend a Summer Saturday afternoon than at the park enjoying the sun, good food, music and games all while raising money for a good cause. This past weekend ReNOVATE which is an acronym for "Rebuilding Nigeria One Village at a Time" hosted their first annual fund raising picnic at Briant Park, New Jersey.

Founded by young men and women within the United States and Nigeria, ReNOVATE plans to educate communities, provide them with the necessary resources and materials to improve their living conditions, and campaign for the need of an improved health infrastructure in Nigeria all with the goal to mobilize communities and improve the daily living conditions in rural Nigeria especially in regards to health, poverty and social issues.

With the advancement of health care in the Western World ReNOVATE has recognized the need for change within Nigeria's Health Infrastructure in order to take full advantage of the progress of public health over the past five decades. Community involvement and mobilization through education is a necessary step to promoting the importance of primary prevention health measures such as malaria vaccinations and medication to curtail mother-to-child HIV transmission. With the constant threat of looming epidemics due to emerging infectious and chronic diseases it is clear that we are all responsible for ensuring the equal distribution of health resources especially with the increasingly rapid rate of disease transmission due in part to our highly dynamic population.

With a highly skilled and motivated team, ReNOVATE reminds us all of the importance of making all of those degrees we have attained mean something more than a multitude of letters following our last names. FAB supports ReNOVATE as they embark on this journey to "be the change we wish to see in the world" (Gandhi).

For more information on ReNOVATE, their mission and to find out how you can help ReNOVATE Nigeria please visit their website http://www.renovatenigeria.com/ or contact them at info@renovatenigeria.com

P-Square in NYC

This past Saturday, the East coast folks were entertained by one of Nigeria's most renowned RnB musical sensations, P-Square. The concert was held at Amazura in Jamaica Queens, NY, and for the first time the crowd got exactly what they were asking for. Hosted by New York's big shots; Big Moose Ent, Ariya Ent and Under Da Rock, the concert featured opening acts from Liberia's Georgee-B from Minnesota, Nigeria's Cap B from New Jersey and Nigeria's Ajah Onu from Atlanta! The opening acts kept the crowd entertained as we anticipated an exciting performance from this dynamic duo.

With attendees describing this concert as The BEST African concert they have ever attended, it is wise for promoters and artists alike to take notes. An amazing stage presence and an energized crowd, many people were shocked at how far P-square has come over the past few years. Their FAB choreography had women screaming at the top of their lungs for hours (yes, HOURS) especially with; "Who wants to marry my brother?". A tough act to follow FAB congratulates the twins for making it a very worthwhile and entertaining evening and for those of you who were unable to catch them here in New York, stay tuned in at http://mypsquare.com/home.html for future tour dates or follow Peter on twitter at http://twitter.com/peterpsquare

I hope all the SuperFans got their voices back on time for work Monday Morning ;-)

Herds of the Fathers

For the past few months I've had my eye on some talent that's been brewing at Rutgers University in New Jersey, and with good reason. Most students wait til after graduating with a Bachelor's degree that gets them that good old 9-5 job before they start thinking outside the box, however the dapper fellas of Herds of the Fathers clearly don't "flock with the herd" and are 10 steps ahead of the game. By practically turning their college apartments into their office/headquarters Herds of the Fathers CEO's Tobi Babajide and Jason Akoi are officially launching their Leather Accessory Collection on July 4th!

With a European/Old school feel, Herds of the Fathers has brought back a classy style for men of all ages in all fields of the game. Some pieces are perfect for those working in the corporate world looking merely for function, while other pieces are perfect for the college student/recent graduate trying to stand out in a crowd.

As much as Herds of the Fathers is focused on menswear; I can definitely see some of my ladies rocking a few of their pieces to add a bold feel to their look.

Making a point to avoid any trends, more information on this timeless collection is available at http://herdsofthefathers.com/

*Look out for the entire collection on July 4th*

Naija Video FAB

Nigeria is really bringing it hard this Summer; not only on the soccer field, but also in the music studio. With the recent loss of brother, friend and colleague Da Grin, YQ has stepped it up to yet another level and has put his heart into his music. FAB congratulates YQ on the release of his hit video, Dresscode, feat. Naeto C. and E-jay.

Also in the music corner we have the one and only 2face with his video for hit single, Implications, which is currently a favorite amongst our fellow Nigerians.

Last but surely not least we have to include Naeto C's FAB video for Ako Mi Ti Poju. Naeto C is known for always putting 100% effort into his music videos and producing the best quality videos Nigeria has seen in a while. We look forward to more work from "Mr. Kini Big Deal".

Seems like the gentleman's corner has been quite busy these past few months. Hopefully the ladies will be dropping some FAB stuff our way this summer...Stay tuned.

FAB would like to thank the Everblazing DJ Neptune for keeping us all in the loop when it comes down to hearing about the FAB work being produced out in Nigeria. Special thanks also goes out to the entire Coalition of Nigerian DJ's family. Look out for all their mixtapes dropping this Summer!!!
